Our client Doug had tested at 12.5 Pico Curies of radon in the basement area of his home. We proceeded and provided a mitigation plan that worked well for this house. The basement was a standard block wall foundation, but recently had an addition to the house which added a concrete floor crawl space to the equation. There were many cracks in the concrete slab of the basement along with a large hole under the stairs creating an easy path for radon to enter.
We ended up installing a mitigation system with two extraction points, one for the basement slab and the other for the crawl. We were able to drill our crawl space suction point through the block wall right in line with the primary suction point to prevent running additional unwarranted pipe. The schedule 40 pipe was run through the block wall into the crawlspace and outside to the fan in a back corner of the house which is partially hidden by landscaping and bushes. Doug purchased the extended warranty, so his system is covered for 10 years along with a muffler to dampen the sound of the fan and air flow. Along with the mitigation system we proceeded and sealed up all the cracks in the concrete slab floor of the basement and filled in the large square hole with concrete. This system proved to be very efficient and should lower the levels dramatically.
Doug also had us install a Breathe EZ Air filter in his furnace. The Breathe EZ air filter does not filter radon, but does filter the lung cancer causing radon decay products.
